Hello,
At this point (about 9:30), it's not raining, so the walk is still on.
If it does start raining, we will STILL have the groundbreaking at 12:00
at 611 E Commanche, BUT we will postpone the walk until next Saturday.

The Walk for Habitat was a big success! We raised over $1,300 to help
build the first OU Habitat house! Many thanks to the 15 or so people
who braved the cloudy, misty weather to show their support for Habitat.
(Hopefully next year it will be nice and sunny.) No word yet on the
fund-raising prize winners, but we will keep you informed. We are now
at approximately 55% of our goal of raising $25,000. Any donations are
greatly appreciated.

Construction should begin soon. Right now we are waiting for the slab
to be poured. After that, we will need 10-15 volunteers nearly every
Saturday. Rita Patel will be in charge of scheduling people for the
work days. If you are interested in building, please contact her at
321-2337 or [log in to unmask] It is not yet clear how we will handle the
scheduling, but everyone please be flexible and understanding if you
aren't able to work the day you want or it rains or whatever. It may
work out to be easiest if we schedule people no more than a week or two
in advance. We are especially interested in student groups or other
organizations who can do some fundraising to help with the building
costs. After all, the biggest limit to how much building we can do is
money. If just having excited volunteers were enough, we'd have built
10 houses already!

OU Habitat is looking for enthusiastic, energetic OU students and
faculty to serve on the OU Habitat Board of Directors. The board
consists of 5-10 OU students and faculty, and we meet the first Monday
of each month at 5:15, rain or shine.

Board members are asked to make a 1-2 semester comittment. The only
necessary requirement is a willingness to attend one meeting a month,
and a committment to helping Habitat's mission of ending poverty
housing. Typically board members are also assigned positions such as
volunteer coordinator, fundraising coordinator, etc. We will work with
you to find a position that matches your skills. You do not need any
type of construction experience, but good organization, the ability to
take initiative, and leadership skills are a definite plus!

If you would like to take part in this rewarding experience (which, by
the way, looks great on a resume), please contact Mike Schneider at
[log in to unmask] or 325-9566. People of all backgrounds and exprience
levels are encouraged to apply; including undergraduates, graduates,
faculty, and staff. (Or, if you know someone who might be interested,
pass this message along.)

Hello,
Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in being on the Habitat board
of directors. The response has been very positive. The selection
process will work as follows: I will email each person who responded a
short questionaire to fill out and return to me. Then I will give the
responses to the current board, who will make the decision of who to
invite. If anyone else would like to be considered, let me know and I
will send them a questionaire as well. The deadline for application is
Friday, March 12.

The Habitat Collegiate Challenge is a spring break trip for college
students who want to do something different with their vacation. This
spring break we will be travelling to El Paso, TX to work on Habitat
houses in El Paso for one week.

The cost to go on the trip is $70. This includes transportation,
lodging, and some meals (lunch). We will be staying in either a church
gymnasium or in a dormitory, and we will leave March 13th and return
March 21st, and we can take up to 15 people.

We will be having an information/sign-up meeting in the next week or two
(watch your inbox). Registration is on a strictly "first-pay,
first-serve" basis. You may secure your spot by paying at the meeting,
or if you can't make the meeting we can arrange alternate forms of
payment. Currently, we have only one reservation. Checks are payable to
"OU Habitat for Humanity".

For more information or to sign up please come to the meeting or contact
me at [log in to unmask]

Hello,
OU Habitat needs 3-4 volunteers to help coordinate lunch for the work
site volunteers each Saturday while the house is being built. The
lunches will be donated by various local businesses, and we need someone
to go to the business on Saturday, collect the lunch, and bring it to
the site. Kortni Kinslow will be in charge of finding a restraunt to
donate the food; your only responsibility will be to pick up the food
and bring it to the site. If you are interested in helping, please
contact Kortni Kinslow at 325-9486.

Hello,
Just a quick update on the construction schedule for the OU house. The
slab has not yet been poured; hopefully that will happen in the next
week or two. This Saturday we will be preparing the site for the slab
by digging a trench for a gas line, and we will need about 5 people.
Rita Patel is in charge of scheduling volunteers for building, so if you
would like to help you may contact her at 321-2337 or [log in to unmask] I
don't know how many people (if any) she has already scheduled for this
Saturday.

Hello,
We will be having our first workday for the OU House this coming
Saturday (March 20), and we would like to invite all of you to come
help. We will probably need around 5-10 people, but the actual number
is pretty flexible. We will basically be doing site preparation to get
ready for the slab to be poured; this will involve digging and general
cleaning up. If you would like to help, please contact Rita Patel at
321-2337 or [log in to unmask] PLEASE give her your phone number so that she
can contact you for confirmation. You don't need any type of
experience; just be willing to work!

We will be working from around 9 to 3 (or whenever we finish, whichever
comes first). You are welcome to work the whole day or part of the
day. Lunch will be provided around 11:30. The house is located at 611
E Commanche, 1 block south of Main and about 3 blocks east of Porter.
Hope to see you all there!

Hello,

This message is to update you all on the construction schedule. I
believe the slab has been poured by now, and the next two weekends (the
ones either side of spring break) will be preparing for framing and
roofing. Since most people will be leaving for spring break we will not
have another workday until March 27th. Starting the 27th we will
probably be having several Saturdays in a row requiring a lot of people,
to do framing, roofing, insulating, etc. Rita Patel will be scheduling
people as needed, so if you would like to help please contact here at
[log in to unmask] or 321-2337. However keep in mind since the schedule can
change due to weather or other delays, so we can't plan more than a few
weeks in advance.

We're still working on the Comanche street house. On Saturday, April 24, we
will be roofing.

If you would like to work on the house this Saturday, contact [log in to unmask]

Since we are roofing it is essential that you wear skid proof shoes (sneakers
are fine, as are top siders). If you normally wear jewelry on your hands (like
rings with raised stones, or bracelets), you may want to leave it at home. I
had to have a ring repaired after the first time I went roofing for Habitat.

We need about ten volunters, first come first served.

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to provide lunch for
Saturday?

The easiest way to do this is to ask a local eating establishment for a
donation. Both Subway and McDonalds have a long history of providing food
for us. You would then pick up lunch at the appointed time and deliver it
to the work site. It's not at all difficult. In fact, it would take no
more than 2 hours. About one hour to solicit the donation, and one more hour
to pick up and deliver the food.

It is also possible to cook it yourself (and it doesn't have to be fancy
at all). Sandwiches and potatoe chips are fine. Of course filet mignon
would also be fine. Roofing is hard work. :-)

There will be approximately 15 people working on Saturday.

Call me or email if you can do this. My voice mail is always on.

Just a note to say that I've added all of the items from the Brownwood, Texas Youth Group visit over the

An update on House 10. Most of the siding is in place and all of the roof decking is in place. The roof was
going to go on today, but the rain stopped all progress.

Take a look.

A message from the Norman Habitat for Humanity group...

Markie,
Thanks for your efforts. I will check out the web site when I close this.
I got three identical messages from you. Is that a test?
Dropped by your house to check taters and my crops at the barn. We must have really gotten hammered but
everything surrived pretty well. I have some erosion in the garden but didn't lose much dirt. The taters got
their fresh leaves nipped by the frost but are coming back strong. After all this rain, a week of sun should
cause the stuff to shoot up. My corn may have gotten washed a bit and since it isn't up yet I may have some
rearranged rows.
I got more water in the workshop of the barn than I have ever had before but it should dry up. The entire
south wall was wet for about three or 4 ft wide the length of the barn. Also, the toilet stool would barely flush
as my two tanks are undoubtedly full to the max with surface water. That happened one time before last year
and they drain out in a day or two.
Trevor is chirping 2 syllable words and is pretty funny. He also can climb an 6 foot ladder to a slide by himself
and scared Meister to death watching him.
Take care, and thanks again for the HH help.
Later,
Dad

have really gotten hammered but
everything surrived pretty well. I have some erosion in the garden but
didn't lose much dirt. The taters got
their fresh leaves nipped by the frost but are coming back strong. After
all this rain, a week of sun should
cause the stuff to shoot up. My corn may have gotten washed a bit and
since it isn't up yet I may have some
rearranged rows.
I got more water in the workshop of the barn than I have ever had before
but it should dry up. The entire
south wall was wet for about three or 4 ft wide the length of the barn.
Also, the toilet stool would barely flush
as my two tanks are undoubtedly full to the max with surface water. That
happened one time before last year
and they drain out in a day or two.
Trevor is chirping 2 syllable words and is pretty funny. He also can climb
an 6 foot ladder to a slide by himself
and scared Meister to death watching him.
Take care, and thanks again for the HH help.
Later,
Dad

Hey Mark--Beautiful job on the web pages. I re-read the letters from some of
the kids and realized how meaningful they are, more so, I guess, after the
high school shootings in Col. They sure were a nice bunch of kids and they
were a big help. Maybe we can contact them and ask them to pray for better
Saturday weather.

Anyway, thanks for all your help. Your proof that there are lots of thing
to be done other than pound nails at the job site.

Hi Mark.....I'm assuming you're the one I talked to on the telephone a
couple of weeks back. I called the Norman office regarding the purchase of a
coupe of t shirts... I did eventually make my way to Norman, came by the
office, but you must have been out to lunch. I would like to have the office
hours. The new T Shirts are cute .....And I too, think the web site is nice.
I have been checking into different ways of "giving something back" to the
community. We're self employed and I like the idea of giving back to those
who have given to us. I've always done my Volunteer work within the school
system where my kids were. Now I have one in college and a high School
Daughter . There isn't much left to do where they are concerned. . I would
like for them to get involved with the Habitat program as well. I would
appreciate more information if you have something you could email to me...
Thank you for what you're doing for the community :)

Thanks for the nice words, but I'm Mark and you probably talked with
Ken Gladden, our executive director.

I'm glad you like the T-shirts and sorry you missed Ken, but office
hours vary depending on what activities take place. Ken's working on
getting the T-shirts stocked at local stores to make them easier to
find.

High school and college are always welcome. (Must be 14 or over). In
fact, the current house is a project of the OU Habitat School Chapter!
A few of the local schools have already worked fundraisers and have
come by to help. Give Ken a call and he'll gladly work something out.

Again, thanks for the nice words and feel free to contact me (Mark -
[log in to unmask]) or Ken 360-7868.

Hi, this is some information to follow up on what we talked about at the =
meeting last Wednesday. =20
=20
* We will send a group to work on a house Saturday, October 30th. The =
address is ??? and you should be there by 9:00 A.M. It will go until 3 =
or 4 in the afternoon, depending on how quickly the work they have for =
you gets done. It will be either painting or landscaping. If anyone =
has access to landscaping materials (like, you work at Wal-Mart or Home =
Depot, etc.) please email Lee at Norman Habitat at [log in to unmask] =
If anyone needs a ride, let me know, and I'll try to arrange some =
car-pooling. They would like about 10-15 people at the site, so if you =
want to come, please email Bronwynn at [log in to unmask] so we're sure we =
have a good number of people. =20
=20
* Would anyone be interested in being our webmaster, or know anyone who =
might be interested? Basically, we need someone to keep the website =
up-to-date, and resolve any email-type problems that come up. =20
=20
* IMPORTANT: If anyone is interested in participating in Collegiate =
Challenge (the Spring Break trip) please let me know, and tell me if you =
have a preference on what part of the country we go to (only vote on =
this if you're seriously considering going). There isn't really enough =
time to discuss this with everyone and come to an agreement, but we will =
take everyone's preferences into account when we sign up for a location. =
The good spots (i.e., warm ones) are going fast, so give me your input =
on this by Monday the 25th. The price tends to be around $100, plus a =
$10 registration fee. Add to that the cost of food and transportation =
(gasoline).
=20
Thanks! =20

Hi everyone! We have a site for the Collegiate Challenge trip the week =
of March 12th. It is Lawrence, Kansas, home of KU and about half an =
hour from Kansas City. It's about a 5-6 hour drive from here. We have =
fifteen spots reserved, and we need a $10 fee (which covers insurance) =
from everyone who will be going! Drop it off with me at room 343 Honors =
House by Wednesday, Nov. 3rd (you can slip it under the door with your =
name if I'm not there). The cost for the trip is $75 per person (in =
addition to the fee), and that can be paid later. We will receive an =
information packet from the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity soon =
confirming the details, but the person that signed us up over the phone =
said that the cost includes meals, which is unusual! So sign up soon if =
you're interested. Thanks!
-Rachael Dotter

Rachael and I met last Wednesday to discuss our plans for the rest of
this semester and for the coming year. Sorry we have not been getting
in touch with all of you on a regular basis. I am emailing with all the
latest info. now. Norman Habitat has a booth for all of the men's
basketball games at Lloyd Noble. This booth will probably be turned
over to us next semester.

We will be having informational booths set up in the Union on Dec. 6th
and 8th. Rachael and I will be manning these during lunch. On the 8th,
there will be a general meeting at 8PM. The room number will be given
in the future.

Basically, you guys have to remember our duty is to raise money for
Norman Habitat. If you have any ideas on how to do so please email or
call me. I still plan on having a clothing drive next semester with
proceeds benefitting us.

For now, I am trying to find people to work our booth this Friday and
Saturday. We need about 4 people. Sorry this is such short notice; it
will not be like this next semester for sure (this is one of the reasons
why I want us to be in charge of the booth). I hope to use part of the
general meeting for scheduling work spots for the booth. Anyway. You
would have to be at Lloyd Noble on Friday at 6PM and then 4PM on
Saturday. If you can work either day, call me at 321-8487 tomorrow by
4PM. After that call me at 359-0659, which is where I will be for the
break. Please get in touch with me as soon as possible.

Have an excellent Thanksgiving and be safe!
