In the past, we have been able to organize plenaries when we wanted to recognize significant milestones. We did one in Kansas City for the 50th Anniversary of Brown.<br><br>My masters’ thesis was on the 20th Anniversary of the Kerner Commission Report. This commission was convened by President Lyndon B. Johnson to study the causes of the 1967 riots. The Kerner Commision was established by a 1967 Executive Order and its<br>report was released on February 29, 1968. The Tet Offensive was the same<br>month. On March 31, LBJ announced that he wouldn't run again. Dr. King was<br>murdered April 4. Sen. Kennedy was shot June 5th and died the next day.<br>There was the an attempt to realize Dr. King's vision for the Poor People's<br>campaign and Resurrection City was built, but it fizzled. Students in my Race, Gender and the News class have been spending the<br>semester studying our local community, Trenton, New Jersey in 1968. Part of<br>that has included looking at press coverage of the community at that time<br>to see evidence of the Kerner Commission's critique. The commission has been a part of some of my research and I think it would be nice to revisit the topic as to the questions of have things improved? We have evidence in the media and journalism that it really hasn't changed that much...we are still divided and we still report on the stereotypical....African Americans in sports, entertainment and crime.
