John Watson of American University and I are coordinating a reunion/session
with students in the first Urban Journalism Workshop, which was held in
Washington at American in 1968 We are tracking down former workshoppers

It is scheduled for August 8 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tom Engleman, the Fund's
executive director in '68, is coming. Planning for the workshop had begun
as the commission was creating its report by the time it was issued the
workshop planning was done and the schedule set. Promoting journalism
careers to Black high school students was among Kerner's [...]

Just a correction from someone who was actually around when the Kerner Report was issued: The commission was formed in 1967 and the report was released in March 1968. Dr. King did see it and commented on it. He was assassinated about five weeks after the report was published. [...]

In the past, we have been able to organize plenaries when we wanted to recognize significant milestones. We did one in Kansas City for the 50th Anniversary of Brown.

My masters’ thesis was on the 20th Anniversary of the Kerner Commission Report. This commission was convened by President Lyndon B. Johnson to study the causes of the 1967 riots. Their findings had a direct impact on the early hiring of African Americans in our nation’s newsrooms and . . . .
I hope that we, MAC, keep up with significant milestones—milestones that pertain to our raison d etre. [...]

The Kerner Commision was established by a 1967 Executive Order and its
report was released on February 29, 1968. The Tet Offensive was the same
month. On March 31, LBJ announced that he wouldn't run again. Dr. King was
murdered April 4. Sen. Kennedy was shot June 5th and died the next day.
There was the an attempt to realize Dr. King's vision for the Poor People's
campaign and Resurrection City was built, but it fizzled. There were
student takeovers at Howard and elsewhere. And that was just the first six
months. [...]

Frankly (and many of us have said this over the years), this is a very good reason to allow panels to be proposed as part of the regular paper competition, NOT decided in the fall!

One idea would be a hot topic panel...AEJMC has done this in the past. I
was on one in Denver on the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. Maybe they have
a slot at HQ saved for something like this in programming?

Thank you all for sharing your ideas. I think this topic would make a wonderful panel. Panels have already been selected and scheduled for the 2018 AEJMC conference.

I defer to MAC Vice Head George Daniels. He is coordinating MAC's panel sessions this year.

Maybe there are some other options for sharing this information such as a website, booklet or research paper on the topic.

This dialogue regarding the 50th anniversary of Kerner is quite interesting for me, considering it's also the 50th for the assassination of Dr. King. If I remember correctly, the Commission was formed after his assassination.
Anyway, a potential program also might focus on the assassination too, as it had some implications for the KC being formed.

Students at Ohio University went on a Civil Rights tour by bus over spring
break; they visited historic sites, news organizations, spoke with those
wrongly convicted and historians. There were classes leading up to it and
following it. One student came in my office a week later and discussed how
she lived in a non-diverse racial area in Ohio and that this experienced
really opened her eyes. She did a daily journal and is going home over this
weekend to write down all the things going through her, so she remembers.
Also, international students also participated. Interesting perspectives on

Students in our doctoral seminar “Critical Research Methods” read the Kerner Report (and other texts) in preparation for conducting critical ethnographic research in 4 DC neighborhoods. They were very moved by the radical findings of the report and its continued relevance. One of the students in the class was a panelist on a community-sponsored Kerner Commission panel (which I helped organize) last week end, and she was excellent. I think our students would like to be involved in a session if one is organized. [...]

Students in my Race, Gender and the News class have been spending the
semester studying our local community, Trenton, New Jersey in 1968. Part of
that has included looking at press coverage of the community at that time
to see evidence of the Kerner Commission's critique. As is true of many
urban areas at the time, there was an outbreak of violence and looting on
the day of Dr. King's funeral that locals refer to as the Trenton riots.
Many white old timers in particular will say that is when Trenton died.
It's also when a police officer fatally shot [...]

This could have value for a potential session. I recently spoke on the
Kerner Commission Report to students at the University of Delaware on an
invitation from Deb Gump who directs the program there.

The professors and I devised these papers for the students before my visit.
They updated them to include how Black Lives Matter demonstrations are
covered. I haven't seen the resultant papers but it would be interesting to
talk about Kerner including what students know or don't know about it. [...]

I would love to join and also lead a panel if needed to discuss the Kerner Commission. The commission has been a part of some of my research and I think it would be nice to revisit the topic as to the questions of have things improved? We have evidence in the media and journalism that it really hasn't changed that much...we are still divided and we still report on the stereotypical....African Americans in sports, entertainment and crime. We need someone to replace me as Membership Outreach Coordinator. Dr Meta
is the Membership Listserv Coordinator and is unable at this time to take
over my duties in addition to her own.

Dr Meta created the ad hoc position for me 21 years ago and let me run with
