I would like to request help from as many people as possible, who can
respond with some good practices and ideas.

*Situation*
As you may know, Dee Fink & Associates (DF&A) recently started a new,
2-week course that provides a good introduction to Integrated Course Design
and the Taxonomy of Significant Learning.

We have a similar problem in our program. All course team taught with external credentialing agency to ensure standards. One thing we do not presently implement, but should is an effective design brief for the courses. This helps delegate responsibilities and also helps to see what the incoming and outgoing students have been taught. It isn't a fun process, but it should not be a task undertaken by one individual. It is purely a team effort. Further, an effective brief helps when new faculty are thrown into the mix or are asked to teach a course previously taught by someone [...]

My first question is exactly what do you mean by "need to agree on 75% of the course"? Are you talking about course outcomes (objectives or whatever you prefer to call it) or which text and other ancillaries will be used or the way the course will be taught, etc. [...]

That's a slippery slope!

Here is my take... You need strong, high-end leadership behind this. It's
difficult to get a group of faculty in a room to discuss giving up their
academic freedom for a course they like to teach *their way*. You also need
someone like an instructional designer to be the facilitator of this
conversation for the committee. It's going to be messy : ) [...]

Greetings All,
So after doing all this research and looking forward to designing my class,
we were informed by our department head that courses that are part of the
core (we the community colleges have a transfer agreement with the state
universities regarding these courses) will be moving toward alignment.

So in my case, the people who are going to me teaching Music Appreciation
(MUS 110) will need to agree on 75% of the course so that administrators
can pull data on how well we are meeting the student learning objectives.
That means we'll be designing this course by committee. [...]

Earlier this year, I did some consulting at Stockton College in New Jersey,
to help them identify ways to implement their institution-wide learning
outcomes, several of which were created from my taxonomy.
One person their, Susan Cydis, has started a faculty study group that
intends to design their courses in a wayto promote these institution-wide
learning outcomes. What they want to know is:

Yes, I have used the book and would highly recommend it. It extends the
objectives beyond the traditional taxonomies rather than replaces those
currently in use. It forces you as a teacher to update your own
objectives and expectations for the students.

About 10 years ago, I taught a segment on emotional intelligence in a
critical thinking course for nontraditional undergraduate students at
University of Denver. At that time, I used a free online multiple-choice
emotional intelligence test developed by Daniel Goleman. A couple of years
ago, I looked for that test and could no longer find it. But there are a

I take it from the other responses to this that by "pre-lectures" you mean audio- or video-recorded lectures that students watch or listen to before class?

I've had great success going slightly lower tech by just having the students read the textbook before class. I have my students complete pre-class reading quizzes (graded on effort) as motivation for completing the reading. I usually have 80-90% of students come to class with something they've learned from the reading. [...]

I've been using Adobe Connect to create pre-lectures for an online Executive
MBA course. The students really like them. I currently create a new set of
lecture every time I teach the course, which allows the lectures to be more
personalized for the group of students. But, of course, it would be more
efficient to create mini-lectures on topics and reuse them! [...]

I am implementing pre-lectures into my second semester general chemistry class this semester. Early observations are fairly positive. It is nice hearing students use fancy terms like "microstates" during class discussions. Has anyone else had experience implementing pre-lectures? then spent the summer redesigning my community health nursing course into

course design to my nursing students because they have only had lectures

One thing I have used with undergrads (Org behavior course) is a 500 word memo. Paragraph one: a concept that applies. Paragraph two: how that concept played out in the experience/exercise. Paragraph three: how it would play out in the business world (in your case the classroom when teaching) and Paragraph four: One lesson learned from this that the student would like to remember for the future. I have not gone as far as having them share them (as they are due the next class) but modifying this to create a discussion would work.

This is something that I adapted from Dee's course. I teach advanced pedagogy classes to grad students and one of the challenges we have (and according to the literature, this seems to be a challenge of these types of programs in general) is that the students don't always apply what they are learning to their own classrooms - they don't make those connections. Reflection seems to be of paramount importance, but from my own experiences as both a student and instructor, the reflections often seemed forced. Glad to hear those ideas were helpful.

As to your question on how to develop skills around Integration, the key
concept in that idea, for me, is "making connections."

Then there are various kinds of connections that you might want
students to learn how to make.

*Types of Connections*

First, there can be connections between/among ideas *within a course*. For
example, in a Psychology course, one might want students identify
similarities and differences among various theorists, e.g., Freud, Skinner,

Ive been teaching in a hybrid International Executive MBA program for many
years. The courses typically begin with a few live sessions during the
students 2-week residential period. Then we have 6 months of
asynchronous online sessions. I love the online sessions; they proceed to
deeper levels than is possible in the limited time of a live class. My
sessions last for four days, and most students add about one posting per
day. In this program, I have taught introductory financial accounting,
introductory cost accounting, and management control systems. I use

Thanks for taking time to respond ... you prompted me to start thinking
about the things that weren't there (from your taxonomy): Integrating,
Caring, and Foundational knowledge.

It seems to me that there are possibly skills that we need to address in
those categories. For example, in the foundational knowledge I suspect that
many students struggle with finding effective ways to understand and
remember the ideas to which they are exposed. i wonder if, for many
students, the rate of knowledge acquisition they are meant to achieve comes

Michael,

I teach an online Chemistry for Health Professions course. My students
are almost entirely nurses who are trying to complete their bachelors.
Although they are a pretty motivated bunch of students, I'm intrigued by
the idea of doing this synchronously, but felt that it wouldn't work
because of student schedule conflicts. Is there a face to face version
of the course you teach? If not, are there options for students who
cannot attend the synch time? [...]

I should add that we started to do a based line pre-test/post-test for our faculty certificate program at our university. We use a five point scale looking at confidence in using active learning, design quality courses etc. (all things we do during the year in the program). In the past few years we have found that most of the categories go up one entire point! This is terrific information for our provost who believes if faculty are learning new ideas and finding alternative teaching strategies to traditional lecture, and develop confidence in their ability....we continue to see good resources coming [...]

Mike - The thing I find so interesting about the folks who have a hard time with the left side ("touchy feely crap" - ouch!) is that if you ask them before they ever see the taxonomy for their "blue sky" dreams about the course and their students' learning, their answers almost always have to do with the left side. And if you ask them why they got into their discipline to start with, again it's almost always represented by the left side. That's how I try to frame it for them before they ever see the taxonomy. I feel your pain about what some of our Criminal Justice and Bio folks
initially disdainfully referred to as the "touchy feely crap." My tack that
works most -- not all -- of the time is to drive them back to DWF (Drop,
Withdraw, Failure) numbers and complaints of "lazy, unmotivated" students. I
always frame this for them in terms of my experience with my own courses, as
I had my Fink-inspired "Should had a V8 moment". I too grumbled and huffed
and puffed about those darn student slackers, but had never asked myself the
hard question about what [...]

Good questions! As one of the Fink & Associates presenters I do hear this question often...of course many times it is not asked as a question but a threat...I am not going to do this since you can't measure caring or human dimension!

Having taught music before becoming a faculty developer I did switch my emphasis of a large introductory music course goals from mainly foundational knowledge and application to caring and human dimension. It became clear to me after just one semester of teaching the course back in the 1970s that foundational knowledge would not last long with students [...]

I work at the Center for Teaching and Learning at UGA and we have gone through the course design process with many faculty members now (in-house we affectionally call it, "Finking your course") through workshops and even a week-long Maymester Institute. What a wonderful task and related question.

I will leave the door open to others, to address your question of which of
these learning goals might have the largest impact. What I can't resist is
the opportunity to note two things about your list of possible learning
goals.

First, if you had not mentioned that the course was mainly about Management
and Marketing, I could have read that list as a good list of learning goals
for "Leadership in Any Kind of Organization" - churches, schools, the
military, university department chairs, non-profits, etc. [...]
