these two references can interest you. I don't know if they are "the  
most important texts", but at least they're quite interesting :

   - RAUCH, J. (2003), « Rooted in Nations, Blossoming in  
Globalization ? A Cultural Perspective on the Content of a “Northern”  
Mainstream and a “Southern” Alternative News Agency”, //Journal of  
Communication Inquiry//, SAGE Publications, 27:1, pp. 87-103. [she  
studies the coverage of the Group of 77 Summit that convened in Cuba  
in 2000, comparing the mainstream Associated press and the Alternative  
Inter Press Service]
   - SMITH, Jackie (2001), “Globalizing Resistance : the battle of  
Seattle and the Future of Social Movements”, //Mobilization : An  
International Journal//, 6(1), pp. 1-20. [coverage of the  
counter-forum of Seattle in 1999 by alternative media]
