The English Department at FIU is will have a Shakespeare Across the Divide conference on February 15-16, 2016, but they welcome any combination of the Bard with topics related to Golden Age, England and Spain, or the Caribbean:
Shakespeare across the Divide will explore Shakespeare across borders and demarcations, alongside his contemporaries as well as into new and current contexts. We also welcome work that explores beyond Shakespeare to develop the early modern period and studies. Especially welcome, given our location, will be work on the Spanish Golden Age, England and Spain in contact in the Caribbean, and interrogations of the early modern and the African Atlantic.
For more information, please consult the link below, but please note that the conference itself will be held at The Betsy Hotel in South Beach, which is a big supporter of the arts in Miami. There will be additional activities on the FIU Campus as part of the Folger Shakespeare Library's First Folio Exhibition Tour, so participants won't have to spend all of their time among the beautiful people in South Beach.
The featured speaker at the conference will be Roland Greene of Stanford University, the author of "Five Words: Critical Semantics in the Age of Shakespeare and Cervantes," published by the University of Chicago Press. There will also be a special panel on race and Shakespeare by Ayanna Thompson, Ruben Espinosa, and Carla Della Gatta.
Please note that abstracts should be sent by October 31 rather than the admittedly non-existent September 31 listed in the link below. If anyone needs a little extra time for the abstract, just contact me at [log in to unmask] and I should be able to get an extension.
