Dear QuIIN Members,

We are pleased to invite you to participate in an innovative project that we believe will have a significant impact on children’s health care. The project, “Genetics in Primary Care Institute Quality Improvement Project (GPCI-QIP)” will provide physicians and their staffs with strategies, tools, and resources necessary to improve the provision of genetic services in primary care. Clinical teams will implement tools, strategies and measures designed to improve the assessment and identification of genetic conditions for all patients, as part of the health supervision visit, and improve the care and management of patients with defined genetic conditions. Teams will also work to improve systems that track children with genetic conditions in order to ensure appropriate follow up, communication, and care coordination take place.  This project is supported by the Maternal and Child Heath Bureau (federal award number UC7MC21713) and managed by the American Academy of Pediatrics through the Practice Improvement Network of the Quality Improvement Innovation Networks and the Genetics in Primary Care Institute.


We are looking for primary care practice teams to participate in this project. The core improvement teams will be led by a physician and will include 2 additional team members, such as a nurse or administrative/office staff. Participants should have a willingness and commitment to work with their teams to improve care and an interest in sharing information learned with other practice staff not on the core team, as well as with other project participants.



We are looking for practices where at least 75% of providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants) in the practice are willing to participate, with a minimum of 2 providers per practice. Not all providers have to participate on the core improvement team of 3, but they should be willing to test changes and include patient charts for review. Solo practices are not eligible to participate. Practices should care for at least 5,000 patients age 0-21 in the practice in order to be selected to participate. These 5,000 patients must be patients in the sites in which providers are participating in the project.

During this 9-10 month project, teams will be asked to adopt a systematic approach for providing genetic services to patients aged 0-21 through the use of improvement science methods, including measurement.  Data collection will involve patient chart review, survey of clinical care systems, monthly reports and calls, and qualitative interviews for some teams. Teams will take part in a day and a half long face-to-face learning session and participate in monthly conference calls to work together with other participants on challenges and successful strategies. The learning session will be held on March 8 and 9, 2013 at AAP Headquarters in Elk Grove Village, IL.  At the conclusion of the project, practice teams will take part in a post learning session to share strategies and lessons learned and discuss sustaining change.

We believe there will be many benefits for participants involved in this nationally recognized project.  Participants will have the opportunity to:

•               Test strategies for improving care that will become a national model

•               Work with colleagues from around the country

•               Learn from national experts, including mentorship from a regional genetics expert or through the Genetics and Newborn Screening Regional Collaborative Groups, and receive ongoing support for improvement

•               Receive American Medical Association PRA Category 1 Credits™ (if approved)

•               Receive American Board of Pediatrics Part 4 Maintenance of Certification credit (if approved)

•               Receive a copy of the newly published AAP publication, Medical Genetics in Pediatric Practice – A Handbook
