Position Description

As a matter of corporate policy, all JSA employees are

SALARY RANGE: $107,400 - $169,600 (SCS III)

the Jefferson Lab Computational Sciences and Technology (CST)
division and is responsible for the support of
Scientific Computing projects at the laboratory.

Jefferson Lab hosts the 12 GeV CEBAF electron accelerator
that is the core of a world leading nuclear physics research
program.

The laboratory is also a partner in the Electron Ion Collider
(EIC) that will be constructed at Brookhaven National
Laboratory.

The Nuclear Physics Computing Lead will combine knowledge of
physics and scientific computing to identify and develop
computational projects critical to the success of the
Jefferson Lab 12 GeV and EIC Science Program and coordinate
scientific computing activities to insure effective execution
of the program.

They will work closely with Jefferson Lab Physics community
and will represent Jefferson Lab in building collaborations
with other DOE National Laboratories and with universities.

Essential Job Functions

* Lead teams of experts in scientific computing to meet the
mission needs of EIC and 12 GeV science.

This includes supplying hardware and software services to the
Nuclear Physics Theory and Experimental programs.

The functions of the groups include software development
as well as recommending third party software packages and
advanced technologies in support of nuclear physics.

* Work closely with groups in Computing, Networking, and
Infrastructure to ensure timely deployment and reliable
operation of the computing equipment.

Provide consistent technical leadership and foster
a professional and best practices mentality.

Develop staffing plans that meet the growing program.

* Serve as a CST Point of Contact with the Jefferson Lab
experimental halls and with the EIC.

* Work with the Jefferson Lab and EIC communities to plan and
provision, appropriate computing platforms, software packages,
software tools, and applications.

* Coordinate JLAB theory computing by understanding scientific,
technical, and computational landscape for the Theory Program,
in conjunction with theory staff.

* As part of a larger team, work to develop computational
projects in data analytics, statistics, and applied math to
support the 12 GeV science programs and other science domains,
working in partnership with universities and other DOE Labs.

* Support strategic laboratory initiatives.

* Serve as an advocate for Jefferson Lab scientific computing
on the national and international stage.

* Maintain direct technical control of at least one forward
going project of benefit to EIC and 12GeV

* Maintain knowledge about trends in computing in the broader
physics community including High Energy Physics and other
Nuclear Physics Facilities.

* This position will direct the efforts of a team of
developers from the CST division and will coordinate
contributions from other lab divisions

Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

* Bachelors degree plus 10 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Demonstrated knowledge of computational infrastructure and
applications applicable to large scale experimental facilities

* Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated
ability to lead and manage a scientific computing project.

* Prior experience in DOE or National Lab environment, or
major international nuclear or high energy physics laboratory
is highly desired

* Ability to interact across organizational levels including
senior leadership and effectively form partnerships.

* Must possess exceptional written and oral communication skills.

Mental Requirements

* Ability to understand, remember, and communicate highly
technical information and make decisions

* Ability to understand complex problems and to collaborate,
explore and implement alternative solutions

* Capable of analytic and deductive reasoning

Physical Requirements

* Ability to traverse across various locations on the
laboratory site and access work areas

* Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended
periods

* Visual capabilities to use computer workstations,
read documents, and see safety alarms

* Auditory capabilities to hear safety alarms
