Graduate Student Position – Data Entry and Transcription

We are hiring a University of Oklahoma graduate research
assistant to transcribe and input data using historical
information on pre-identified homesteader families in Oklahoma.
The documents covered include 19th century federal census
records, General Land Office (GLO) records, archived
(digitized) newspapers, and witness data. In this part-time
position you will work up to 10 hours per week transcribing
handwritten and typed data from digital copies of documents.

Requirements: The remote work position requires basic
familiarity with Excel or Google spreadsheets, an attention to
detail, great communication and organizational skills, and
the ability to read cursive handwriting and/or general script
(pre-1900). The position requires reliable access to the
Internet, a computer, and the ability to participate in
virtual meetings.

Training: As part of the position the successful applicant
will be trained in the transcription process by a current
postdoctoral fellow who is a member of the larger research
team.

Benefits: The position pays $15/hour up to 10 hours per week.
The project timeframe is 24 weeks beginning in April 2022 and
ending in September 2022. You will develop skills in the
interpretation, collection, and management of historical data.
You will work as part of a team and contribute to a larger
grant funded project on African American land ownership and
homesteading in rural Oklahoma in the late 19th century and
early 20th century.

Application: To apply, submit a current resumé (two-pages
maximum) and a cover letter detailing your interest in the
position, relevant experience, and required skills noted
above. The application closes April 4, 2022.
