*Call for Candidates, AMARC International Board of Directors*
*/Step Up for Community Radio...Worldwide!/*
*The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters, AMARC*, brings
together a network of more than 4,000 community radios, federations and
community media activists in more than 115 countries. Since its creation
in Montreal, Quebec in 1983, the main global impact of AMARC has been to
accompany and support the establishment of the world-wide community
radio sector that has brought democracy to the media sector in much of
the world. AMARC advocates for the right to communicate at the
international, national, local levels and defends and promotes the
interests of the community radio movement through solidarity, networking
and cooperation.
*Anyone involved in community radio is welcome to run for the AMARC
International Board. *There are no specific requirements. However a
candidate would find the following skills and experiences valuable:
An extensive background in non-commercial, non-governmental
community-based radio or media, Fluency in a second language in
addition to English, A strong commitment of support to the
developing world, using community radio as a tool for empowerment,
development, education and democratization of the media,
Leadership and planning skills to serve a diverse, international board
and organization.
*A candidate* should be available to travel internationally which
requires a valid passport. Women, Native Americans/First Canadians and
people of color are encouraged to apply. While North America is not a
formally recognized region, a Vice-President At Large serves to
represent its two member nations, Canada and the United States. The term
of office is four years beginning November, 2010.
*AMARC works for*: sharing of good practices in community media;
advocacy to improve media policies, laws and regulations; joint action
through community media for social justice, gender equity and a
sustainable planet; knowledge sharing on the use of new communication
tools and technologies; strategies to empower and support communities
faced with conflict, emergency and disaster.
*The Board Election* will be held during the AMARC X Conference in La
Plata, Argentina. Candidates may be nominated up until that time and
should make every effort to be in attendance.
