*El futuro de NUESTROSMedios*



Con su tradicional compromiso con la red, Clemencia y Sergio enviaron un
mensaje en español e inglés sobre el futuro de NUESTROSMedios.  Todos hemos
estado preocupados de que la red vaya a desaparecer, por el poco entusiasmo
y participación de los miembros.  Yo mismo fue uno de los que sugirió –
durante la apertura del congreso en Bangalore – que si la red habría de
desparecer por la falta de interés, pues que así fuese.  Pero Bangalore nos
demostró que había más gente - de la que pensábamos – comprometida a empujar
el proceso con tal de que saliese adelante.  Hay una joven generación muy
motivada a la que necesitamos darles oído en la toma de decisiones.  Por lo
que es tan importante que cualquiera que este leyendo este mensaje y tenga
una opinión al respecto: participe y tenga un voto.  Nadie es dueño de esta
red, así que todos se deberían sentir con el derecho a opinar  o comentar
sobre cualquier información que circule por ella.  Aquellos que han estado
involucrados desde el inicio deberían apoyar la moción por este proceso de
renovación.

Una vez más está sobre la mesa el tema de si NUESTROSMedios debe o no
convertirse en una organización con estructura de jerárquica o una
organización con una estructura de comunicación eficiente.  Esto quiere
decir que tendríamos que elegir a ciertas personas para que realicen ciertos
trabajos o asuman ciertas responsabilidades.  Lógicamente, esto también
quiere decir que tendríamos que tener cierto financiamiento básico para
poder mantener el secretariado, etc.  yo en lo personal estoy en desacuerdo
con una estructura muy formal y creo que hemos un buen trabajo hasta ahora
sólo con unir nuestros entusiasmos.  Algunos, como Clemencia, le han
dedicado mucho más esfuerzo y tiempo que otros.  Hay mucho por mejorar en
cuanto al flujo de comunicación en particular en lo referido al portal de
Internet, pero no hemos sido capaces de hacer esto último, no veo la
necesidad de una estructura más compleja con más generales que soldados.

Si bien es cierto, todos queremos que NUESTROSMedios sea algo más que una
conferencia anual.  Queremos que se convierta en una red de académicos y
activitas más real, que pueda articular nuestro trabajo en varias partes del
mundo entre conferencia y conferencia. Entonces el discutir es un elemento
clave, pero cuando lo hagamos deberíamos ser bastante realistas, porque
todos somos miembros de numerosas redes virtuales y rara vez tenemos tiempo
para participar en línea.  Nuestros intercambios en esta lista de correos
son clara prueba de esto.  ¿Cuántos de los que reciben estos correos
contribuyen realmente con ideas?  YO soy uno de aquellos que aparece de vez
en cuando, pero algunos otros ni siquiera aparecen una vez al año.  Esto
indica que el hacer funcionar a la red sobre una plataforma virtual es más
que difícil.  Lo que sea que decidamos hacer deberá ser algo factible, no
sólo un deseo platónico.  No soñemos con tener un financiamiento para
funcionar como organización.  Sigamos aprendiendo en cómo hacerla funcionar
con lo poco que tenemos.  Sobre todo, pensemos en incluir a NUESTROSMedios
en otras actividades en las que participamos; esa es la mejor manera de
hacer algo por NUESTROSMedios.

¿Somos únicos? Yo creo que si.  Somos diferentes de IndyMedia, somos
diferentes de una red de académicos, somos diferentes de las redes
activistas.  Es la mezcla entre académicos y activistas que nos hace únicos,
o por lo menos nos hacia únicos.  Si hay alguna otra red haciendo lo mismo,
todavía tenemos el derecho a reclamar que nosotros fuimos los primeros.  El
hecho de haya nuevas redes sólo significa de que hay más gente en el área
con diferentes necesidades.  Las redes no se multiplican con los mismos
miembros, aunque nosotros seamos parte de varias redes al mismo tiempo.  Como
Clemencia mencionó, deberíamos estar emocionados ante este nuevo desarrollo.

Otra cosa queda clara, ninguno de nosotros puede "disolver" NUESTROSMedios,
porque nadie es dueño de ella.  Podrá ir desapareciendo, si es que nadie le
presta atención, pero no puede ser eliminada por un decreto.

Como fuera, yo creo que la discusión debería llevarse a cabo durante la
conferencia, no sólo por correos electrónicos.

Disculpen este mensaje tan largo en la lista.  De repente compensa mi
ausencia durante los dos últimos meses.

*The future of OURMedia*

With their usual commitment to the network, Clemencia and Sergio issued a
message in Spanish and English on the future of OURMedia. We have all been
concerned that the network may disappear, given the tepid level of
participation. I myself suggested at the opening of the Bangalore conference
that if we had to disappear because of the lack of interest, be it.  But
Bangalore showed that there were more people than we even thought, committed
to push the process forward. There is a young generation motivated, but we
need to make room for them in the decision making process. Which is why is
so important than anyone reading the messages in this list participates and
has a saying. Nobody owns this network, so everyone should feel free to
comment on what is circulated. Those that have been involved from the
beginning should support a process of renewal.

Once again there is on the table the topic of OURMedia becoming, or not, an
organization with a formal structure: a governance structure, an
institutional structure, or an efficient communication structure. This means
having people elected to perform certain tasks and assume certain
responsibilities. Logically, it may also mean having some core funding to
maintain a secretariat, etc. I personally disagree with a very formal
structure, and think that we have managed quite well until now just by
joining our enthusiasms. Some, like Clemencia, have dedicated much more time
and effort than others. There is much to do to improve the communication
flow and particularly the website, but if we haven't been able to do that
part, I don't see a more complex structure being put in place, with more
generals than soldiers.

It is true that we all want OURMedia to be more than an annual conference.
 We want it to become a real network of academics and activists that can
articulate our work in various parts of the world between two conferences.
It is a key issue to discuss, and when we do that, we should be very
realistic, because we are all members of numerous virtual networks and we
seldom have time to participate online. Our exchanges on this list are a
clear proof.  How many of those receiving these emails actually contribute
with their ideas? I'm one of those that surfaces every now and then, but
some others don't even show up once a year.  This is to say that making a
network function on a virtual platform is far from easy. Whatever we decide
to do, it has to be feasible, not just wishful thinking. Let's not dream
about having financial support to function as an organization. Let's
continue learning how to do things with the little we can get. Above all,
let's think of including OURMedia in the other activities that we do; that
is the best way to do something for OURMedia between two conferences.

Are we unique? I think so. We are different from IndyMedia, we are different
form academic networks, we are different from activists' networks. The mix
of academics and activists is unique, or it was.  If there is another
network doing the same, we still have the right to claim that we were there
first. The fact that there are new networks only means that there are more
people in the field, with different needs. Networks do not multiply with the
same people, although we might be part of several networks at the same time.
As Clemencia pointed out, we should be excited about these developments.
One thing is clear; none of us can "dissolve" OURMedia, because nobody owns
it. It may fade away if nobody pays attention to it, but it cannot be
eliminated by decree.
Anyhow, I think the discussion should take place during our conference, not
just by email.
Sorry for this very long posting in the list. Maybe it compensates my
absence during the past two months.
