Egunkaria cleared, free.
The recent judicial decision of the Spanish Law Court (Audiencia
Nacional) has cleared the five former directors of the Euskaldunon
Egunkaria newspaper accused of collaboration with ETA.
As you remember, Euskaldunon Egunkaria newspaper was closed in 2003 by
a court order dictated by a Spanish judge, based only on “evidence”
provided by the Spanish Police (Guardia Civil). As a result of that,
the employees lost their jobs and the only newspaper entirely in
Basque disappeared. During the last seven years, the accused have
suffered torture, years in prison, unfounded accusations and numerous
economic losses.
At the same time, we want to thank the support done by OurMedia to the
Egunkaria at the final declaration read at the end of the Congress
which took place in Ghana.
This news is very pleasant and, whilst only partially repairing the
damaged caused, goes some way to restoring the faith of those who work
constantly to defend freedom of speech.
