Welcome to the OUHSC listserv for discussing the role of handheld computing and PDAs in the development of instructional applications. This list is sponsored by the Center for Academic Technology Resources (CATR) in cooperation with HSC Information Technology and the Bird Library, and supports the Instructional Applications Development Lab concept currently under development. For more information on this and the organization of this effort, please contact me directly at <mailto:[log in to unmask]> [log in to unmask]

I would like to start the discussion on this list by focusing on a particular area for possible development and implementation that is receiving a lot of attention in several areas, namely databases for handhelds.Various discussions from multiple individuals and units on campus consistently mention applications that are based on databases as a high priority.

To get things started, let's hear from some on the list:

* What are you doing, or what would you like to do, that utilizes databases on handhelds? Tell us about the application (what you are doing, why you are doing it, what problem you are solving, what you hope to achieve), your hardware and software choices, and areas of success or concern.
* What are your greatest needs related to the use of databases on handhelds? Have you heard about some software that you would like to know more about? What kind of custom programming support for your applications would you like to see be available on campus? What software have you already tried? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

Since this is an open listserv, it is likely that we will develop multiple discussion tracks related to handhelds / PDAs. For this initial discussion, please try to include "DB" in the subject line to help us keep up with messages in this "database" track.

Additionally, we have not had time or occasion to publicize this list yet, so please feel free to forward this message and the subscription directions (below) to those you believe would be interested in the discussion.

To subscribe to these lists you would send an email to [log in to unmask] with a blank subject and subscribe pdalist Chris Jones as the only item in the message body. To unsubscribe you would do the same with signoff pdalist in the message body. To post to the list send an email to [log in to unmask]

Thank you for your participation!
