Hayg:
Thanks for getting the Latino plenary accepted by the AEJMC board as their session and for agreeing to pull it all together. Since this is a plenary session for all attendees we'll need to put something together that will go beyond the choir and draw a crowd, something that has been an issue at some previous plenaries focused on diversity.
Here are some suggestions for a three-part plenary for your consideration in putting together the program:
1. Open with brief comments recognizing and showing El Misisipi as the first Latino newspaper in the U.S. and a forerunner of other newspapers serving other people of color, then move to bullet points showing the growth of Latino and other ethnic media in all forms in the USA today. (5 minutes)
2. The Voices for Justice project has funding from the Ford Foundation and other sources to do a pilot/demo reel for a documentary on the history and development of Latino media in the U.S. to be produced by veteran filmmaker Ray Telles. We could show a preview/excerpts/clips/etc. from the documentary to give the educators an idea of what the story is and also fo a resource that they could use on their campuses. It would also reference other resources such as a website that is already up and a companion book on key media and people that is in the research/writing stages. (15 minutes)
3. An address/presentation by a prominent journalist or journalism figure who is or has been active in Latino media on the growing influence and impact of Latino media on journalism and American society today and in the future, i.e. Alberto Ibarguen, head of the Knight Foundation; Maria Elena Salinas, Univision anchor; Juan Gonzalez, New York Daily News Columnist, or others with name recognition that will draw a crowd. (30 minutes)
4. Q and A for the remainder of the time.
Thank you again for taking the resolution that Juan Gonzales and I put together to the AEJMC leadership and membership. We're making great progress and interest is building. If we can help some more, please let me know.
Siempre Adelante,
Felix
