Peter, thanks for sharing that, even though it’s sad news.
Yes, Dennis was well known among the weather and ham community in Norman even though he had left to go back to his home state many years ago.
He and Jim Purpura, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the Norman NWS at the time, were very proactive in setting up linked weather nets throughout the OUN warning area (which had been expended into Texas from the old OKC office area of responsibility) and getting weather info out over the weather spotter nets before the days of people having access to live radar on their phones and tablets everywhere.

COVID-19 is not over.

For those who don't know, Dennis McCarthy was MIC at OUN back in North
Base days.  Even as MIC, he was always at the radio during storm
events. KC5EVH (his call, before offices generally had calls) was
unflappable on the radio even as violent tornadoes were chewing up
OUN's CWA. He was amazing.

RIP, Dennis. :-(
