Hi Sue,
Ohio University Scripps College of Communication is embarking on a project as part of the Media Deserts Project work called "Media Corps". The idea is to use geotagged scholarships, matched by local community funds, to support the education of young journalists. These journalists then commit to 1-2 years of news and information coverage in their communities (like AmeriCorps, Teach for America, etc).

By geotagging the scholarships, we avoid making the scholarships race-based, but accomplish similar goals in drawing applicants from underserved and underrepresented communities.

What if every school looked at the media deserts around them and offered similar scholarships to their journalism programs? Just a thought...

Let me know if you'd like more information.

Imagine Better,
Michelle Ferrier

Thanks for sending these links!!

I have a related question. A friend from the Kettering Foundation is
looking to find out which journalism programs are:

"explicitly dealing with race, class, social justice, etc. in specific
courses or even lines of study. How are students prepared to deal with
these important issues, story lines? Does anyone focus on this?"

If you or you know of any School that offers this kind of work to
undergrads, could you PM me at [log in to unmask]

Thanks! And feel free to forward to any relevant list serves as well!!
