Department 	Communication Journalism  
Work Location: 	UNM Main Campus (Abq)  
Position Summary: 	The Department of Communication & Journalism invites applications for a full-time probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision as an Assistant Professor to begin August 2013.

Minimum Qualifications: 	1. PhD in mass communication or related field completed by August 2013.

2. Three years of relevant professional experience in strategic communication, advertising, public relations, marketing, or graphic design.  
Preferred Qualifications: 	1. Record of teaching effectiveness, with experience and interest in teaching advertising, public relations, and marketing as an integrated discipline.

2. Experience or skills necessary to teach a variety of undergraduate courses appropriate to the needs of the department and the candidate's expertise. Specifically, the ideal candidate will be able to teach (a) the Creative Concepts course as well as (b) some combination of the following courses: Introduction to Strategic Communication, Strategic Planning and Positioning, Strategic Communication Campaigns, Design and Visual Presentation, Electronic Publishing.

3. Experience or background necessary to teach graduate-level courses.

4. Professional experience encompassing the creative functions (design or copy) of strategic or mediated communication and ideally including familiarity with Adobe's Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks programs.

5. Strong record of scholarship showing potential to lead to tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor. The ideal candidate will have published or presented conference papers in (a) an area intersecting at least one of the main concentrations of our department's doctoral program: intercultural, health, and mass communication; or (b) strategic communication, integrated marketing communications, or any of their allied/component disciplines (e.g., advertising, public relations, e-commerce, sponsorship, event marketing, sales promotion, social media).

6. Ability to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

7. Ability to serve as faculty advisor to student organizations such as AAF (Ad Fed) and PRSSA.

8. Ability to contribute to diversity through research, teaching, and service.  

The Department of Communication & Journalism at UNM has national accreditation by ACEJMC for its programs in journalism and mass communication. It offers undergraduate majors in multimedia journalism, strategic communication, and communication studies; an MA program in communication studies; and a PhD program with emphases on intercultural, health, and mass communication. The department, which sits on historic Route 66 in a newly renovated building, is consistently ranked by students as one of their favorite departments on UNM's campus.
