OPEN RANK FACULTY POSITION IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AT USC ANNENBERG The Public Relations Studies Program at USC Annenberg’s School of Journalism seeks applicants for an open rank faculty appointment. Candidates should have a firm grounding in the study and practice of contemporary public relations, as well as both the desire and expertise required to lead the field into the future, especially in the area of digital/social media. The appointment may be made tenured, tenure-track, or non-tenure-track, depending on the background and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Candidates may come from either the profession or the academy.

Professionals must have: a record of outstanding accomplishments demonstrating leadership and the creation of new knowledge/techniques that advance the profession at the national or international level; a minimum of ten years of broad, senior level experience specifically in the PR/communication field; and (preferably) an advanced degree in a relevant discipline (i.e. PR, communication, marketing, business, law, etc.).

Scholars must have: doctoral degrees (though ABDs who will complete their degree work by August 1, 2010 will be considered); active, applied research agendas focusing on one or more of the areas of interest listed below; and (ideally) substantive professional experience. Applicants from related disciplines (Marketing, Management, Business, Law, Humanities, Political Science, Sociology, etc.) are welcome provided that there is a demonstrable record of relevance to and interest in PR/communication.

In both cases strong preference will be given to candidates having substantial, demonstrable expertise in the current and future application of digital/social media.

Other desired traits include:
o Expertise in one or more of the following areas of interest: international communication (i.e. a global or international, rather than purely domestic, POV); word of mouth communication (i.e. “buzz”); the relationship between organizational management and PR/communication; PR/communication for social action and change; and visual communication.
o Highly motivated, ambitious, innovative, out-of-the-box thinker intent on making a significant contribution to the practice and study of the field.
o Strong evidence of the potential to be an outstanding instructor.

The new colleague will:
o Develop and manage applied research projects conducted by the USC Annenberg Strategic Communication and Public Relations Center.
o Provide leadership within the Annenberg School, the public relations/communication profession, and the academic community.
o Advise master’s students and supervise thesis projects involving digital/social media, as well as all other applications of public relations/communication.
o Teach in undergraduate and/or graduate programs.
o Be actively engaged in faculty governance and service, i.e. curriculum development, student recruit and admission, etc.

Annenberg is closely connected to a future-oriented, diverse metropolitan area that is rich in PR/communication talent of unusual variety. We recognize that PR/communication is undergoing revolutionary change and redefinition, at the very time it is being asked to play an increasingly pivotal role in sustaining the transparent exchange of information that is at the heart of democracy. At USC Annenberg we intend to help lead that change, shape that definition, and advance the symbiotic relationship between public relations and public interest.

Applicants should send a letter describing their background, interests and areas of expertise, their curriculum vita or resume, three references and samples of their recent professional or scholarly work to the School’s director:

Geneva Overholser, Director, School of Journalism USCAnnenberg Schoolfor Communication
3502 Watt Way
