University of Washington
Seattle, Washington

The University of Washington seeks an associate professor in the area of race/ethnicity and communication in the Department of Communication. We seek faculty committed to our department's principles of intellectual and cultural pluralism, interdisciplinary theorizing, diverse methods of inquiry, public scholarship and community engagement, and innovation through collaboration among faculty and students.

Department faculty have identified seven areas of emphasis — communication and culture; international communication; political communication; rhetoric and critical studies; social interaction; technology and society; and journalism. Candidates for this position are expected to contribute significantly to at least one of these areas; to provide leadership in the study of race, ethnicity and communication; to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and to contribute broadly to the department's intellectual life.

Candidates should have a strong research record in race/ethnicity and communication, defined broadly to include face-to-face, on-line, mediated, or mass-mediated contexts. Particular focus may include critical race theory; the social construction of race in relationship to issues of power; the shifting nature of conceptualizations of race; the enactment or challenging of racial conceptions through media representations or public discourse; the rhetoric of race and ethnicity; or cultural ideology and communication about race.

Faculty are expected to conduct research, teach 4 courses during a three-quarter academic year, and supervise graduate students at the master's and doctoral levels. Experience mentoring students of under-represented groups would be highly valued. Ph.D. required. Candidates should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of research and teaching interests, a representative publication, copies of teaching evaluations, and three letters of recommendation.

The start date for this position is September 16, 2006. Applications will be reviewed beginning February 15, 2006, and until the position is filled. Send application material to: Professor Gerald Baldasty, Chair, Department of Communication, Box 353740, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195-3740.

The Department of Communication is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and covered veterans. The University of Washington is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
