Here's another fellowship opportunity some of you might be interested in. I participated in the program in Summer 2002 and found it to be quite informative. As well, it gave me an opportunity to experience Southern Cal and it's pleasant climate. More important, it was a nice way to get immersed into Japanese culture, including the langugage.

Announcement:  Japan Studies Institute for 2006

San Diego State University

June 1-23, 2006

Applications are sought for the 2006 National Faculty Development Institute on Incorporating Japanese Studies Into the Undergraduate Curriculum.  The Institute allows faculty without prior experience in Japanese studies to learn from scholars, business leaders, artists and journalists about Japan, both past and present.  It is designed to encourage participants to develop strategies for incorporating Japanese studies into courses on their campuses. The Institute is multidisciplinary in approach, and introduces participants to a comprehensive range of teaching and learning resources related to the study of modern Japan.



Participants must be full-time faculty or administrators at member institutions of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), have the potential to impact undergraduate education, and have no prior training or professional experience in Japanese studies.



The Institute provides a $5,500 Sasakawa Fellowship for each participant selected. That Fellowship includes the administrative and academic costs of the Institute and campus housing.  Participants receive up to $600 for round trip transportation to San Diego State University and an $800 stipend for meals and other expenses. Institutions whose faculty are accepted for the Fellowships pay a partial tuition of $500.



The Sasakawa Fellowships are made possible by a generous endowment from the Nippon foundation. They are managed by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), an association of more than 400 public institutions of higher education across the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. San Diego State University provides the academic program and the facilities.
