this is so true. I grew up in the South, Selma, Alabama in fact. We need to make a statement. We teach students to be objective in reporting the news; however, we live in a time of yellow journalism, sensationalism, gone amuck. Such reporting needs to be called in check. This is an outrage and a cruel, yet familiar injustice. The fact that the administration would rush to judgement without looking into this matter smacks of the injustice often dished out to minorities when a racial element is involved and their is an accusation of an injustice perpetrated upon a member of the dominant culture by a minority member. There is a call for swift action that harkens back to the 1800's.  This needs to stop. Mrs. Sherrod suffered greatly as a result of this criminal act, the deliberate editing of this tape for the purpose of slandering her, damaging her character. This is a woman who has already suffered living in the shadow of knowing that her father was murdered and that nothing was done. She lived in that world and was shaped and molded, in large part, by this traumatic experience that was a major force in her life. It was a great injustice to have her story of healing and transformation in the midsts of such odds--so thoughtlessly toyed with. The trauma of Selma looms large in my mind and is forever colored there. Mrs. Sherrod's story is very personal for me so I ask how do we begin as professionals to start making a real difference in the world of media gone mad, media that do often do not  apply ethic standards when reporting on minorities.
