Assistant Professor in Health Communication, Job Posting Number 0812990
The Department of Communication & Journalism at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision as an Assistant Professor in health communication to begin August, 2012. The department expects to hire a specialist in health communication and is open to various theoretical and methodological approaches. Health communication is one of three core research areas in the department (with mass communication and intercultural communication) and includes such foci as interpersonal health communication, communication campaigns/social marketing, health disparities, community-based participatory research, and diffusion of innovations. There are multiple interdisciplinary research centers available for collaboration including efforts in substance abuse and addictions (Center for Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions), mental health, the Robert Wood Johnson Center on Health Policy, and the University of New Mexico Health Cancer Center. This position will be a joint appointment with the BA/MD program (an innovative curricular program that admits New Mexico high school graduates as freshmen to UNM medical school and seeks to graduate them within 8 years with a BA and MD). The faculty member will be expected to teach a required junior-level seminar in the BA/MD program on cultural issues and health disparities along with courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in Communication & Journalism. Service commitments will be jointly shared with the BA/MD program and the department; the home department, however, will be Communication & Journalism.
The university is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to diversity through their teaching, research, and service. Advising graduate students in Communication & Journalism is an expectation.

Assistant Professor in Intercultural Communication, Job Posting Number 0812991
The Department of Communication & Journalism invites applications for a full-time probationary appointment leading to tenure decision as an Assistant Professor to begin August 2012. The department expects to hire a specialist in intercultural and is open to various theoretical and methodological approaches. The university is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to diversity through their teaching, research, and service. Advising graduate students in Communication & Journalism is an expectation. In 2004, the UNM doctoral program was ranked #2 among intercultural communication departments in the United States. Our program emphasizes the study of inter/cultural communication practices with a particular focus on the intersection of culture, change, and communication. We use the term inter/cultural deliberately to (1) signify our interest in culture as socially constructed and structurally produced and as a factor that is influential across communication contexts; and (2) to emphasize the study of difference as perceived and addressed across cultures. At the doctoral level, the curriculum includes courses such as Culture, Sustainability, and Change; Culture, Community, and Change; and Culture, Borderlands, and Change. Within the department, the Institute of Communication, Culture, and Change aims to engage research with communities to address local and international social justice issues. The department is consistently rated as a student favorite across campus. Various campus research centers and programs provide opportunities for collaboration, such as the Latin American & Iberian Institute, the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute, the Institute for American Indian Research, Women Studies, Africana Studies, and Sustainability Studies.

Lecturer III in Communication Studies, Posting Number 0813079
The Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full time, 9-month appointment at the rank of Lecturer III to begin in August 2012. This is a renewable teaching appointment based on the lecturer's performance. The position involves 70% teaching and 30% service, and the teaching load involves 7 courses each year (4 for the Fall semester and 3 for the Spring semester). The department seeks to hire a generalist in communication with preparation in a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. Specifically, the department seeks a lecturer with knowledge and experience teaching the foundational communication theory course as well as undergraduate classes that fit with the requirements and electives for at least two of the department's undergraduate degree concentrations: interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, mass media and public communication. The department offers specialized courses for its 700 communication and journalism majors, a wide range of electives for students majoring in related disciplines (business, sociology, psychology, and political science), and the core course (public speaking) available for all undergraduate students at the university. The university is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to diversity through their teaching, research, and service. Advising graduate students in Communication & Journalism is an expectation.
