Dear MAC Members,

I am in support of whatever MAC members decide to do. As a group, we need to think BIG. Lee was too important for us to think in terms of $50 increments whether in support of the scholarship or flowers to the family.

As I said, Dr. Barrow was too important to us but also to AEJMC in terms of his overall contributions. To that end, as a member of the AEJMC board, I have written to Jennifer McGill asking that HQ post a tribute to Lee on the web site. I have requested that this come before the board as a virtual vote, if it is necessary.

The PR specialist for AEJMC, Mich Sineath, is also launching a series of initiatives to generate dialogue on relevant topics to JMC. He is calling them, hot topics. There is also a general discussion board for user generated commentary or dialogue.

While we are making a decision about how we will honor Lee from a financial standpoint, there is also a visible way that we can let the larger AEJMC community realize Lee's importance. We can all post tributes to Lee on the AEJMC web site. George (Daniels), we could start with the excellent tribute you posted to your own personal blog.

I'm writing mine now and hope others will join me. I am also encouraging MAC members to write to AEJMC Headquarters at: [log in to unmask], urging the organization to take a public position on the life and death of Dr. Lee Barrow.

Those of us who sat through the endless strategic planning session meetings may recall that there was a demand for the organization to be more pro-active in calling attention to important events relating to JMC. This is an opportunity for AEJMC and MAC to practice what we preach.

In the spirit of Lee Barrow and Barack O'Bama, let's not only make financial contributions, but let's get busy.

Best,

Von

I agree that a significant - at least $500 - donation to the scholarship that carries his name is appropriate. I, too, was at the State of the Division panel at AEJMC and was inspired by Dr. Barrow's account of his efforts for AEJMC and MAC. I hope that AEJMC will at least match whatever our division gives, since his efforts ultimately worked for the betterment of all. He also made it clear that mass communication education at the doctoral level still needs to be opened up to a wider audience.

Dr. Lee mentioned during MAC's state of the division panel last summer that he would like for us to reclaim a leadership role in the scholarship selection process and funding. It was a humbling experience to hear MAC's history first-hand, as well as his aspirations for the division. I would like to see MAC make a more significant contribution to the scholarship fund, and to secure a matching contribution from AEJMC given his legacy and pivotal leadership for both. Consider this virtual discussion following the motion before it is put to a vote.

I move that we use MAC funds to send flowers or a donation of up to $100
to a charity of the Barrow's family choosing in honor of Dr. Lionel
Barrow, Jr.

Note: The 9/30/2008 balance in the MAC treasury was $5387.22

Subject: Passing of a Journalism Trailblazer

MAC members,

It is with great sorrow that I share the news of the passing of one of
the giants in journalism education, Dr. Lionel Barrow, Jr. Many of you
may already know of this sad news. I just posted a tribute with some of
my personal thoughts on my blog this morning.
