I was on a panel that focused on the conflict between diversity coverage
and free press rights of student media. It would be interesting to
explore how many times campus media run into trouble with minority
groups for opinion pieces. Egs.: UNC columnist wrote that all Arabs
should be strip-searched at airports but misrepresented the bent of her
piece when interviewing Arab students and faculty; cartoonist at a Fla.
college used the "n" word in connection with Kanye West's comments
post-Katrina.
Also what about the right of students of color to assembly and to seek
redress, This would be a good research topic, panel and opportunity for
scholastic division and MAC to come together again.

Subject: Developing Panel Ideas - Please read

Colleagues,

Before leaving for the weekend, I wanted update everyone on how the
late-breaking panel proposal suggestions are going. We now have four
colleagues who've expressed an interest in developing panels on the two
topics we've been discussing over the past 36 or so hours. They are:

1) press coverage of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath as it relates to
coverage/portrayal of minority peoples (victims, leaders, etc.); and
2) black press history and contributions of great journalists and
cartoonists such as Mr. Clint Wilson Sr. Also, someone informed me that
the first Asian newspaper started in or near the area where we will be
meeting next year (San Francisco).

So, if you'd like to make suggestions for these panel proposals, please
contact one or more of the following colleagues. We especially need
leads on experts (historians, scholars, etc. who can speak on these
issues)

Colleague contact information is as follows:

Topic #1 (Hurricane Katrina/Rita coverage) -
Contacts: Federico Subervi: [log in to unmask] or
Anita Fleming-Rife: [log in to unmask]

Topic #2 (Black Press/Tribute to Greats such as Mr. Wilson)
Contacts: Felix Gutierrez: [log in to unmask] or Ali
Mohamed: [log in to unmask]

Thanks for all your hard work!!!
