I am a late addition to a panel at AEJMC on the problems of providing
diverse coverage while guaranteeing student press rights.
I am looking for examples where college or high school newspapers have
angered or precipitated protests by students of color for coverage in
the campus paper. I have one example involving UNC's Daily Tarheel and
an ad campaign by David Horowitz regarding reparations. How were these
situations resolved? Examples from the Diamondback and University of
Pennsylvania involved students stealing papers. In other places, is it
possible that students wrote, reported their way out of the conflict.
Were there diversity training sessions or community forums on the
underlying issues?
Please forward links or references to other instances to me as soon as
you can. The panel is Aug. 13 in San Antonio.
