Dear Colleagues,

First of all, I would like to thank George for sharing this panel idea with us. We will support/sponsor a panel on Charleston incident if AEJMC can create a new panel slot.

As Sharon mentioned, the deadline has passed for panels but we have the following roundtable panel that will address the Ferguson, MO, incident.

Research Panel: #Ferguson Coverage in Visual Social and Alternative Media -- Research Insights
This roundtable-style research panel will share insights from original and ongoing research on visual social and alternative media’s role in coverage of Ferguson, Missouri, after a police officer fatally shot African-American teen Michael Brown in August 2014.

Since this panel is about research insights and this panel is planned to be roundtable-style, panelists were also advised to share their ideas and insights on further research on this type of coverage/similar incidents. we are sure the Charleston incident will also come up during the session.

Panelists include Frank Michael Russell, Missouri; Holly Cowart, Florida; Ginger E. Blackstone, Florida; Mia Moody-Ramirez, Baylor; Doug Mendenhall, Abilene Christian; and Mark Poepsel, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville

So if you are attending the AEJMC Convention this year, please save the date for participating in the discussion part of this roundtable-style panel at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, August 7.

Best,
Mas

I'm still on the AEJMC board and am happy to ask AEJMC executive director Jennifer McGill and AEJMC president Elizabeth Toth about this important panel idea if you'd like. Just let me know.

Most likely the late adds will have to be approved at the board level vs. an individual division trying to do do this. I say have someone talk to Jennifer McGill about this proposal.

AEJ has put together late added Hot Topic panels in the past. Couldn't this be a Hot Topic panel?

AEJMC Colleagues,

Apologies for the double-postings for those of you on both the MAC and CSM listserv. Wanted to pitch some type of programming during our San Francisco Conference about the events in Charleston and even more important, our media's coverage of race and the ethical issues involved.

Today our NABJ President Bob Butler issued a statement acknowledging the "long-needed national dialogue" about race, but took issue with Don Lemon's handling of the issues regarding the use of the so-called n-word and the Confederate flag.

Here's a link to Bob Butler's statement...

In the past, AEJMC Programmers have allowed for "late-breaking" or HOT TOPICS panels to be added to the program when major issues arise that have an impact on what we're teaching in the classroom and the contributions that we as mass media scholars can make. As final revisions are made to the San Francisco Program, perhaps there' s a window for a session on this topic?

I wanted to gauge interest among those in MAC and CSM and perhaps explore the possibility of offering some programming for our upcoming conference on this issue. This certainly touches our PF&R interests as well as what we do as teachers and researchers.

Thoughts?

Perhaps our MAC and CSM Leadership could weigh in and suggest how we might proceed.
