FYI--

The College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida is seeking applicants for the position of Chair of the Department of Journalism to begin no later than July 1, 2011.

The College seeks a senior faculty member who will provide visionary leadership for faculty and who has a distinguished record that includes: experience managing people, budget, and other administrative responsibilities; scholarly publication; professional journalism experience; and demonstrated ability to lead faculty and students in both traditional journalistic principles and innovative ideas for the future.

The successful applicant will work closely with an experienced and diverse group of faculty and administrators. The chair will be responsible for implementing the Department's new curriculum for fall 2011, and for collaborating with faculty and others on new curriculum initiatives.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate commitment to high-quality education at undergraduate and graduate levels, leadership in mentoring faculty and students, and supporting research and creative activities.

The Department of Journalism has 19 faculty and about 650 undergraduate majors. It is part of the College of Journalism and Communications, which has about 2,200 undergraduate students, 130 master's students, and 80 Ph.D. students. With four academic units, one AM and two FM radio stations, two television stations, and other multimedia properties, the College has recently opened a state-of-the-art newsroom that will allow students from all disciplines to collaborate on multimedia projects.

The Department of Journalism is also home of the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information and the Florida Scholastic Press Association, and its students are routinely winners in such contests as the Hearst Journalism Awards and SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards. The Department has a strong and active professional advisory council, with members coming from organizations such as The Miami Herald and MSNBC.com.

A Ph.D. is required for this 12-month position. The successful candidate must also meet the University of Florida's criteria for tenure upon hire. Preference will be given to those who can be tenured as a full professor.

Applications must include an electronic copy of the following: (1) a letter of interest; (2) complete curriculum vitae; (3) names, addresses, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers of at least three professional/academic references. The Search Committee may request additional materials at a later time. Review of applications begins October 18, 2010, and will continue until the position is filled.

If an accommodation due to a disability is needed to apply for this position, please call (352) 392-4621 or the Florida Relay System at (800) 955-8771 (TDD). Questions can be directed to the Search Committee Chair: Ted Spiker, Associate Professor, P.O. Box 118400, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611-8400 (telephone: 352-392-6990) or [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

The University of Florida seeks applications and nominations from a broad spectrum of individuals including women, members of diverse ethnic groups, and persons with disabilities. The University of Florida is an equal opportunity institution. The Florida "Government in the Sunshine" laws require that all documents related to the search process be available for public inspection.
