The School of Communication at the University of Hartford is beginning a search for a full-time Assistant Professor with expertise in journalism and media who would contribute to the diversity of its faculty. Preferred candidates will have collegiate-level teaching experience or the equivalent professional experience and be able to teach a variety of courses related to writing, reporting and editing across a range of delivery platforms. The Communication major is a dynamic program with over 220 majors and potential for future growth. They seek a person who will take an active role in revitalizing and expanding our curriculum in journalism and media in bold directions, address how these areas have been transformed by new technologies and attract new kinds of students, and who has an interest and ability to teach both offline and online.

The University of Hartford “values diversity in all of its forms” and encourages applications from candidates “committed to working with diverse populations and conversant in multicultural issues.” This is especially true in the School of Communication that includes courses where students examine the representation of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality in news and learn how to practice journalism that serves the interests of diverse communities.

Moreover, the School is committed to providing education in journalism and media to a broad diversity of students that come from an array of backgrounds, notably different genders, races, ethnicities and sexual minorities. We hope to contribute to the education of a new generation of journalists and media producers whose work represents a much broader range of perspectives than in the past when the voices of marginalized groups were ignored in the mainstream news media. The School is better able to train these aspiring journalists if they have faculty guiding them that come from similarly diverse backgrounds.

Send a letter of application, vita, sample syllabi, three letters of recommendation with contact information, and a representative sample of journalistic work to Dr. Branislav Kovacic, Search Committee Chair, at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Please put “Journalism and Media Position” in the subject line. Screening begins January 15, 2016 and will continue until the position is filled. For any other questions related to the search contact Dr. Kovacic at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
