Congrats to MACers Deb Aikat and Alex Tan (last year) and our Past
President MACer Paula Poindexter for co-creating this publishing
opportunity. If I've missed MACers please post additions. Thanks.

'Agendamelding' and 'Journalism for Social Justice': Diverse Entries Win
Book Contracts in AEJMC-Peter Lang Scholarsourcing Series

A new take on agenda-setting theory and an in-depth exploration of the
journalism associated with social justice movements will be published as
part of the AEJMC-Peter Lang Scholarsourcing Series.

Book contracts will be awarded to:

   - Donald L. Shaw of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Debashis 'Deb' Aikat of
North Carolina-Chapel Hill, David H. Weaver of Indiana University, Chris J.
Vargo of Colorado Boulder, and Milad Minooie of North
Carolina-Chapel Hill for
Agendamelding: How We Use Digital Media To Create Personal Community.

   - Linda J. Lumsden for Journalism for Social Justice: A Cultural
History of Social Movement Media from 'Common Sense' to #blacklivesmatter.
Dr. Lumsden is with the University of Arizona.

Their winning proposals were chosen through a unique
"Scholarsourcing" process, now in its second year. Drawing on the idea of
crowdsourcing, the innovative initiative enabled AEJMC members to review
abbreviated and anonymized book proposals, and to indicate which ones they
felt were most promising. Eighteen proposals were received this year, and
more than 100 AEJMC members participated in the selection process.
Although distinctly different in topics and approaches, both
books have contemporary media use at their heart. The Agendamelding book
will build on our understanding of how media set agendas to consider how
audiences seek agendas - how people construct their own media networks to
represent the places they live, work and play within networked personal
communities. Lumsden's book will link the richly varied print culture of
ten social justice movements with their counterparts among today's online
media, weaving contemporary interviews together with historical analysis.
Their books will be jointly published by AEJMC and Peter Lang,
an international scholarly press with offices in the United States and
throughout Europe. The innovative academic book publishing initiative, the
brainchild of Peter Lang Senior Acquisitions Editor Mary Savigar and AEJMC
Past President Paula Poindexter, was launched last year. Inaugural
contracts were awarded in 2015 to Aikat for a book about the evolving roles
of journalists and journalism; and to Alexis Tan of Washington State for a
book outlining the scope of contemporary journalism research worldwide and
highlighting opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration. Their books
are scheduled for publication in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
The Scholarsourcing initiative applies a "crowdsourcing" model
to the selection of academic books for publication. AEJMC members are
invited to submit abbreviated proposals, which are then read and ranked by
AEJMC members. Savigar then invites authors receiving the highest ratings
to submit more extensive proposals. These are then reviewed and voted on by
a five-person editorial committee that includes Poindexter as well as
Carolyn Bronstein (DePaul), David Perlmutter (Texas Tech) and Richard
Waters (San Francisco). Jane Singer (City University London) serves as
committee chair and series editor.
Savigar said: "What I found so encouraging this year was the significant
increase in the number of members involved in reviewing the proposals. More
than 100 AEJMC members participated. Their willingness to take the time to
review and vote is equally important as the willingness of members to
submit proposals. We now have four excellent books contracted for the
series, and I very much look forward to seeing how things develop over the
next year."
"The editorial committee is thrilled with how the
Scholarsourcing process is working - and with the results so far," Singer
said. "We are getting excellent proposals to review, and although choosing
among them is difficult, we are excited about the books that have made the
final cut each year. They are a wonderful testimony to the intellectual
richness of our organization as well as the talent and creativity of our
members. We can't wait to see these books in print!"
Entries will open for the third year of the AEJMC-Peter Lang
Scholarsourcing initiative on September 1, 2016, with a closing date of
October 20, 2016, for submission of abbreviated proposals.
